Position: Public relations/Communications Intern

Organization Background: The African Institute for Health and Development (AIHD) is a non‐profit, Non‐Governmental Organization (NGO) established in June 2004 in Nairobi, Kenya by a group of accomplished African researchers and academicians. The Institute mainly focuses on implementing evidence-based programmes and conducting research, training and advocacy on health and development issues that are contextually relevant to Kenya and the African continent. While implementing its programmes, AIHD works with in partnership with the National and County Governments in Kenya, and in collaboration with local, national, regional, and international partners. The Institute is involved in policy formulation on key development issues such as poverty alleviation, gender mainstreaming, health promotion, Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), social protection, among others. Over the years, the AIHD has acquired experience and expertise to improve well-being of individuals, communities, the nation, and region at large. To this end, the Institute has implemented programmes in several African countries including but not limited to, Kenya, Ghana, Uganda, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Zambia.

Job Summary: The AIHD is looking for a public relations and communications intern to organize and oversee communication activities and ensure effective communication with partners, media, and the public in general. The public relations and communications intern will support internal and external communication strategies, write, and disseminate publicity material, respond to inquiries from the media and public in general. S/he should be able to think creatively and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, be confident in your public speaking and project management abilities.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Maintaining and updating information on the organization’s website including programme updates.
  • Develop public relations campaigns and media relations strategies
  • Managing and updating information on the AIHD’s social media platforms: Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Facebook, etc.
  • Track media coverage and follow industry trends in health and development discourse.
  • Documenting events and program activities through photography and videography.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Minimum of an undergraduate degree in a relevant field (Communications, Media Studies, Public Relations, Journalism, etc.).
  • At least two years' experience undertaking coordination and communication related functions including on social media.
  • Background in researching, writing, and editing publications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Computer literate with capability in email, MS office, infographics and related business and communication tools.
  • Significant ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to adapt work plans flexibly depending on external opportunities.
  • Creativity and problem-solving aptitude.
