Background: The African Institute for Health and Development (AIHD) is a non‐profit, Non‐Governmental Organization (NGO) established in June 2004 in Nairobi, Kenya by a group of accomplished African researchers and academicians. The Institute mainly focuses on implementing evidence-based programmes and conducting research, training and advocacy on health and development issues that are contextually relevant to Kenya and the African continent. While implementing its programmes, AIHD works with in partnership with the National and County Governments in Kenya, and in collaboration with local, national, regional, and international partners. The Institute is involved in policy formulation on key development issues such as poverty alleviation, gender mainstreaming, health promotion, Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), social protection, among others. Over the years, the AIHD has acquired experience and expertise to improve well-being of individuals, communities, the nation, and region at large. To this end, the Institute has implemented programmes in several African countries including but not limited to, Kenya, Ghana, Uganda, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Zambia.

Job summary: The AIHD is seeking to recruit a Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Officer who will lead the design, implementation, and operation of M&E systems from project initiation to closeout. S/he will oversee the monitoring, evaluation, analytics, and reporting of performance, providing regular project reports as required. S/he will conduct regular project data analysis and identify methods to use results for programme improvement.


The Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Officer’s primary responsibilities will include:

  • Support the development of the M&E Plan for projects, including indicator selection, target setting, reporting, database management, and developing M&E and/ performance monitoring plans.
  • Lead role in overseeing data collection, collation, storage, analysis, and reporting while ensuring high quality and audit worthy data.
  • Responsible for supporting the preparation and review of programme reports in collaboration with programme staff.
  • Manage research activities and ensure outcomes and lessons learned are integrated into the project and shared with relevant stakeholders.
  • Provide training and mentoring to partners and staff to ensure the implementation of strong M&E systems.


  • Bachelor’s degree in statistics, demographics, public policy, social sciences, economics, monitoring and evaluation or related field. Post graduate certificate on M&E or higher will be an added advantage.
  • Minimum of six years of professional experience in an M&E position responsible for implementing M&E activities on international development projects.
  • Knowledge of the major evaluation methodologies (e.g., qualitative, quantitative, mixed method, and impact surveys) and data collection and analysis methodologies.
  • Demonstrated experience of statistical packages and/ or data analysis software (e.g. SPSS, CSPro, STATA, NVivo, Atlas.ti, Open Data Kit (ODK), Excel etc) and advanced computer skills (word-processing, spread sheets, and databases) are a must.
  • Experience in strategic planning and performance measurement, including indicator selection, target setting, reporting, database management, and developing M&E and/ performance monitoring plans.
  • Proven success in designing, implementing and operating project M&E systems from project initiation to closeout stages.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability through previous experience with data quality assessments and oversight, developing and refining data collection tools and analyzing data, and managing and providing ongoing training to M&E field officers and/or subgrantees.
  • Experience in planning and managing surveys and gender-related analysis.
